This filter sits at the inlet of the hydraulic actuator, immediately upstream of the servo valve. It's the last particle interception point before oil enters the 0.02mm clearances of the servo valve's nozzle-flapper and spool assembly. Contamination that passes this filter has nowhere to be caught before it reaches the most damage-sensitive component in the EH control system. Element replacement, which requires briefly opening the filter housing to the environment, is the moment of greatest contamination risk.

 

The replacement procedure must treat the filter housing as a clean room component, not as a standard maintenance item. Begin by cleaning the exterior of the housing and the surrounding pipework with clean lint-free rags dampened with clean system fluid — removing surface contamination that could fall into the housing when opened. Place a clean tray beneath the housing to catch any drips. Have the replacement element, still sealed in its original packaging, ready before opening the housing.

 

When the housing is opened, work quickly. Air exposure is unavoidable but should be minimized. Do not touch the replacement element's filter surfaces with bare hands — wear clean nitrile gloves throughout the operation. Remove the loaded element, inspect it briefly for physical damage or unusual contamination character, then immediately insert the new element and close the housing. The total open time should be under two minutes for an experienced technician following a prepared procedure.

 

Flush the housing before considering the job complete. After the housing is sealed and the system is returned to normal pressure, open the actuator drain connection briefly — with the EH system at operating pressure — to flush any residual air and any contamination that entered during the replacement out through the drain rather than into the servo valve. This flush volume needs to be only a few tens of milliliters — enough to clear the volume between the new element and the actuator inlet. Close the drain, confirm the actuator responds correctly to a small test command, and log the replacement in the maintenance record with the date, operating hours, and the as-found appearance of the removed element.
