The stator cooling water system is one of the few systems in a power plant where even a brief flow interruption has immediate and serious consequences. The stator windings generate heat continuously during operation. The water flowing through the hollow conductors removes that heat. Stop the water for more than a few seconds and winding temperature begins rising at a rate that can reach trip thresholds within minutes. The filter SL-1250 serving this system must be changeable without interrupting flow — and the changeover must be executed with enough care that the flow rate doesn't change significantly during the transition.

 

The parallel filter design addresses this by keeping both filter housings permanently connected to the inlet and outlet manifolds, with isolation valves on each housing. Under normal operation, one housing is in service and its isolation valves are fully open. The standby housing has its isolation valves closed, its element in place, and is either dry or pre-filled with deionized water.

 

Before initiating a changeover, pre-fill the standby housing with deionized water through the vent connection until the housing is fully liquid-filled with no air pockets. Air pockets in the standby housing will flush into the water circuit during changeover and may cause local hot spots if air bubbles reach the winding cooling passages. Verify the standby housing vent shows water rather than air before proceeding.

 

Open the standby housing inlet isolation valve slowly — over several seconds, not all at once. Monitor the stator cooling water flow rate during this opening. It should remain stable or increase slightly as the parallel path opens. Then close the active housing inlet valve slowly. Monitor differential pressure on both housings: the newly active housing should show a differential pressure consistent with a clean element, confirming the changeover was successful. The decommissioned housing should show decreasing flow as its inlet valve closes and zero differential pressure when fully isolated. Any differential pressure reading on an isolated housing indicates incomplete valve closure and requires investigation before declaring the changeover complete.
